What is ADHD?Early in life (or even during pregnancy), the brain and nervous system may develop in such a way that results in specific patterns and experiences that we have come to describe as ADHD. Genetic and environmental factors, like stress, may play a role in its development. Mis(sed)-diagnosesADHD often goes unnoticed, especially in women and girls, partly due to social pressures and gender bias that encourages coping strategies to mask symptoms, falsely labelling symptoms as laziness, lack of effort, or being "too sensitive," or overlooking ADHD as a possibility when other conditions co-exist, like anxiety or depression. This can lead to a lack of, or delayed treatment. |
Common ADHD symptomsDifficulties with focus, organization, or paying attention, impulsive decision-making, hyperactivity, or restlessness are common experiences with ADHD. Some may experience mostly inattention or mostly hyperactivity, and others experience a combination of both. Treatment strategiesIt's often assumed that kids will "outgrow" ADHD, or that medication is the only answer. The truth is, ADHD often persists into adulthood, and therapy, education, and lifestyle changes can dramatically improve the quality of life for folks with ADHD at any age, with or without the added use of medication. In therapy, we can explore the treatment strategies that feel right for you. |
