What is BPD?BPD usually emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood, and is commonly associated with chronically invalidating experiences in childhood (e.g. needs repeatedly unmet or repeatedly criticized, minimized, or dismissed), leading to a disorganized and unstable sense of self and identity. Stigma and misdiagnosesWomen seeking help for emotional distress have often been overdiagnosed with BPD, while the same behaviours in men are not. People with BPD are often mislabelled as "difficult," "overly emotional," or "attention-seeking," hindering care and treatment. Getting an assessment with a BPD-informed therapist can be crucial to helping you get support for a healthier, happier life. |
Common BPD symptomsA pattern of intense and unstable relationships, impulsive behaviours, mood swings, feelings of anger, emptiness, fear of abandonment, paranoia or dissociation, an unstable self image or identity, or self harming behaviours or suicidal ideation can all be potential symptoms of BPD. Treatment strategiesBPD is not a life sentence. With the right support, such as DBT, mindfulness based and trauma informed therapy, you can expect significant improvement from symptoms, learn and practice effective coping strategies, develop a more secure sense of self, and build and maintain healthy relationships. The first step toward cultivating a more fulfilling and satisfying life, is reaching out for support. |
Ultimately, the goal of BPD healing is not just symptom management, but a deeper sense of self-awareness, self-acceptance, and the capacity to connect with others in a more authentic and fulfilling way.
