Online OCD Assessment for Adults Across Alberta, B.C., & Ontario

Get clarity with a comprehensive OCD assessment from a registered psychologist.

Have you been experiencing unwanted thoughts, images, urges, or fears that are difficult to control?

Maybe you find yourself repeatedly checking, seeking reassurance, avoiding certain situations, mentally reviewing events, or performing rituals to reduce anxiety.

You may have wondered:

“Could this be OCD?”

But getting an accurate answer isn't always straightforward.

Intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviours can occur for many reasons, and OCD can sometimes overlap with anxiety disorders, depression, trauma-related concerns, ADHD, and other mental health conditions.

That's why a formal OCD assessment can help.

At Deep Sea Psychology, our registered psychologists provide comprehensive online psychological assessments for adults. We take the time to understand your symptoms, history, patterns of behaviour, and how your experiences affect your everyday life.

The goal isn't simply to give you a label.

It's to help you understand what's happening and identify meaningful next steps.

Is OCD Part of What You're Experiencing?

OCD is more than simply being organized, careful, anxious, or particular.

For some people, OCD involves intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that feel unwanted, distressing, or difficult to dismiss.

These experiences may lead to repetitive behaviours or mental acts intended to reduce distress, prevent something bad from happening, or obtain certainty.

For others, OCD may look less obvious.

Compulsions can include things such as:
  • repeated checking
  • reassurance seeking
  • excessive research or searching for certainty
  • mental reviewing
  • mentally repeating words or phrases
  • counting or repeating actions
  • excessive cleaning or washing
  • avoiding situations, people, objects, or thoughts
  • repeatedly asking others for reassurance
  • performing behaviours until something feels “just right”
  • mentally trying to cancel out unwanted thoughts
  • spending significant amounts of time trying to resolve uncertainty

Sometimes the compulsions are visible.

Sometimes they happen almost entirely in the person's mind.

And sometimes people don't recognize these experiences as compulsions at all.

A comprehensive assessment can help put these experiences into context.

Why Consider a Formal OCD Assessment?

Searching online can provide information, but it cannot determine whether OCD is the best explanation for what you're experiencing.
A formal psychological assessment looks at the full clinical picture.
Your psychologist will consider:
  • the nature of your intrusive thoughts or concerns
  • repetitive behaviours and mental compulsions
  • avoidance and reassurance seeking
  • how much time symptoms take
  • the level of distress they cause
  • how symptoms affect work, school, relationships, and daily life
  • when your symptoms began
  • how your symptoms have changed over time
  • other mental health concerns
  • whether another condition may better explain your experiences
  • whether multiple conditions may be contributing

The goal is to move beyond a symptom checklist and develop a clearer understanding of your individual presentation.

A Formal OCD Assessment May Be Right for You If...

You may want to consider an assessment if you:
  • experience recurring unwanted thoughts, images, or urges
  • feel driven to perform repetitive behaviours or mental rituals
  • spend significant amounts of time checking, reviewing, researching, or seeking reassurance
  • avoid situations because of intrusive thoughts or fears
  • find yourself repeatedly trying to achieve certainty
  • experience significant distress related to unwanted thoughts
  • feel that your thoughts or behaviours are interfering with daily life
  • have been struggling to understand whether your experiences are related to OCD
  • have received different explanations for your symptoms
  • want a professional opinion before pursuing treatment
  • want a formal psychological report to share with another healthcare provider

You don't need to be certain that you have OCD before seeking an assessment.

OCD Can Look Different From Person to Person

OCD doesn't always look like the stereotypes portrayed in movies or online.

Some people experience obvious physical compulsions. Others experience primarily mental compulsions.

Some people recognize their thoughts as excessive or unreasonable. Others feel an intense need to resolve uncertainty before they can move forward.

Some people spend hours performing rituals. Others may spend relatively little time on visible behaviours while experiencing significant internal distress.

The presentation can be complex. That's why a thorough assessment considers your individual experience rather than relying on a single questionnaire or symptom list.

What Does an OCD Formal Assessment Involve?

At Deep Sea Psychology, we believe psychological assessment should be thorough, collaborative, and clinically meaningful.

Your assessment may include several components.

1. Initial OCD Formal Assessment Consultation

You'll begin with a complimentary 15-minute phone or video call consultation with a psychologist.

This gives you an opportunity to:
  • describe what you're hoping to understand
  • ask questions about the assessment
  • learn what the process involves
  • discuss whether an OCD assessment is appropriate
  • determine whether our service is a good fit for your needs

2. Comprehensive Clinical Interview for OCD

Your psychologist will meet with you virtually for a detailed clinical interview.

You'll have an opportunity to discuss your current concerns and the experiences that led you to seek an assessment.

Depending on your circumstances, this may include discussion of:
  • intrusive thoughts and images
  • fears and concerns
  • compulsive behaviours
  • mental rituals
  • reassurance seeking
  • avoidance
  • anxiety and distress
  • developmental history
  • medical and mental health history
  • relationships
  • school and work
  • previous treatment
  • current functioning

Your psychologist will also consider the broader context in which your symptoms occur.

3. Evidence-Based OCD Assessment Measures

Your psychologist may use standardized psychological assessment measures to better understand symptoms associated with OCD and related concerns.

These measures provide additional information to support the formal assessment.

Questionnaires are one component of the assessment, not the entire assessment.

4. Review of Relevant Information

Where appropriate and with your consent, your psychologist may consider relevant information such as:
  • previous psychological reports
  • medical records
  • treatment history
  • information from other healthcare providers
  • other documentation that may help clarify your history

Additional information can sometimes help identify patterns that are difficult to understand from a single appointment.

5. Clinical Formulation, Diagnosis, and Treatment Recommendations

Your psychologist will integrate the information gathered throughout the assessment.

This includes considering whether your presentation is consistent with OCD and whether other factors or conditions may also be relevant.

The assessment is not simply about answering:
“Do I have OCD?”

It is also about understanding:
“What is contributing to what I'm experiencing, and what should I do next to best support my mental health?”

6. Feedback Session

You'll meet with your psychologist to review the results.

During this session, you'll have an opportunity to:
  • understand the findings
  • ask questions
  • discuss the diagnostic conclusions
  • understand recommendations
  • discuss potential next steps

We want you to leave with more than a report.

We want you to understand what the findings mean, and feel empowered in your own mental health journey.

Your OCD Assessment Report

Following your assessment, you'll receive a written psychological report prepared by your psychologist.
Depending on the nature of your assessment, the report may include:
  • reason for referral
  • relevant background information
  • clinical interview findings
  • assessment results
  • relevant clinical history
  • diagnostic formulation
  • diagnostic conclusions
  • strengths and areas of difficulty
  • recommendations
  • suggested next steps
The report can provide a useful summary that you can discuss with your healthcare providers and use to inform future treatment planning.

What If It Isn't OCD?

This is an important part of a formal assessment.

Intrusive thoughts, repetitive behaviours, anxiety, avoidance, and difficulty managing uncertainty can occur in a number of different conditions.

Sometimes OCD is the best explanation.

Sometimes another condition may better account for the difficulties.

Sometimes several factors are contributing.

A comprehensive assessment allows your psychologist to consider these possibilities rather than assuming that every distressing thought or repetitive behaviour means OCD.

Whatever the outcome, the goal is greater clarity.

Why Choose Deep Sea Psychology for Your Online OCD Assessment?

Assessment by Registered Psychologists

Your assessment is completed by a registered psychologist qualified to provide psychological assessment services in the province where you reside.

Comprehensive Rather Than a Quick Screening

An online quiz can be a starting point for learning about symptoms.

It cannot replace a professional assessment.

Our approach considers your history, current functioning, symptoms, assessment results, and broader clinical presentation.

Focused on Understanding the Whole Person

Your psychologist considers more than symptoms.

We look at how your experiences developed, how they affect your life, and what other factors may be relevant.

Clear Results and Recommendations

We don't want you to finish an assessment wondering what the results actually mean.

Your psychologist will review the findings with you and provide recommendations based on your individual presentation, values, and needs.

Secure Online Appointments

Your assessment can be completed virtually, allowing you to meet with your psychologist from the privacy and convenience of your own home.

Online OCD Assessment Frequently Asked Questions

Is an OCD assessment the same as an online OCD test?
No.

Online questionnaires can provide information about symptoms, but they do not establish a diagnosis.

A formal psychological assessment involves a clinical interview, consideration of your history and current functioning, and appropriate standardized assessment measures.
Can OCD involve only thoughts without visible compulsions?
OCD can involve significant mental compulsions and other internal strategies that may not be obvious to people around you.

A comprehensive assessment considers both observable behaviours and internal experiences.
What if I have another mental health concern as well?
Your psychologist will consider the broader clinical picture.

OCD symptoms can occur alongside other mental health concerns, and some symptoms can overlap with other conditions.

Understanding these factors can help inform appropriate next steps.
Will I receive a written report?
Yes. Following your assessment, you'll receive a comprehensive psychological report summarizing the relevant findings, diagnostic conclusions, and recommendations.
Can I share the report with my doctor or therapist?
Yes.

With your consent, your report can be shared with your physician, therapist, or other healthcare providers involved in your care.

You Don't Have to Figure It Out Alone

If you've spent months or years trying to understand unwanted thoughts, repetitive behaviours, anxiety, avoidance, or a need for certainty, it can be difficult to know where to start.

You don't need to diagnose yourself before seeking help.

A formal assessment can help you understand the bigger picture, determine whether OCD is an appropriate diagnosis, and identify meaningful next steps.

Get clarity from a registered psychologist.
